Cordova, Tenn. (November 26, 2012) – Katie Akin, a senior at St. Benedict High School, has been named a C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars Award winner.
Akin is one of six students in the Greater Memphis area who received this week’s award for social sciences and history. C Spire Wireless will recognize more than 160 students during the 2012-2013 school year. Akin and other weekly winners will be honored at a luncheon at the Hilton Memphis, Thursday, May 2, 2013.
Akin is an outstanding student who currently ranks in the top five in a class of 244 seniors. She holds a 4.43 weighted grade point average and scored 31 on the ACT with a perfect 36 in reading. Akin has been selected as a National Merit Semifinalist and earned a top score of ‘5’ on the AP U.S. History exam and the AP English Language exam.
With a plan to study International Relations in college, Akin is goal-oriented and diligent about academics. She has top writing and critical thinking skills and has competed in the district, state and national levels of the National History Day competition. Akin and her team did extensive research into women’s suffrage and built a website on women’s rights.
Akin is president of the National Honor Society and editor of the school newspaper. She was vice president of the National Latin Honor Society, a SGA class representative and officer in the Latin Club. Akin also is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the Key Club and Pep Club.
The C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars program was conceived to identify and recognize high school students for excellence in academics, school leadership and community service. Now in its 7th year, the C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards are presented weekly for 28 weeks during the academic year from nominations submitted by school administrators.
Judges include educators from Rhodes College, The University of Memphis, LeMoyne-Owen College and Christian Brothers University. Each Sunday during the year, C Spire Academic All-Stars are announced in The Commercial Appeal.
